Review of The Pickle Barrel – Markham

The Perfect Pallet Pleasing Place for Peckish Picky People… I like their advertising; and my family also likes going to the restaurant! Here’s a review of our recent visit we took this weekend with some tips for you!
Ambience: Pretty standard amongst all the ones we’ve gone to, slightly darker with spot lighting. Comfy booths and atmosphere is generally welcoming of kids.
Kids Stuff: They’ve upgraded this with a nice activity placemat now with lots of fun stuff (word search, colouring, find the differences, etc.). Crayons are reused and come in trays… I don’t know why I keep mentioning this but it just doesn’t seem to be the hygienic thing to do nowadays (especially with H1N1 making the rounds).
Kids Food: Good selection for $5.99 with nice ‘premium’ meals for $6.99 which includes a bit more food, a drink and a dessert. On our last trip, we bought 1 premium meal and, split between the kids (with a bit extra from the parents’ plates), the kids were full at the end of the meal.
Coolest Thing About Restaurant: The menu for the parents is HUGE with tons of selection (not always a good thing…) but most food we get is usually of good quality. The 2 Pickle Barrel’s we frequent are in malls so their location is handy after a long shopping excursion.
Worst Thing About Restaurant: When you’re being seated, ensure you ask for a seat that’s NOT under one of the vents. It can get quite chilly!
Tips to consider: At our last visit, our server was very nice and gave us a free loaf of bread to munch on while waiting for our food. You might want to ask for this as a complimentary item (doesn’t hurt!).
Overall Experience: Food is of decent quality and locations are perfect in a mall (when you’re not interested in the regular food court fare).
Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

We just ate at the Yorkdale Pickle Barrel today. It may be just the ambiance of a higher end mall or perhaps there really was a difference, but the food was MUCH BETTER here than at the Markham location! The sauce tasted deliciously home-made (complete with bay leaf in the sauce), the fruit cup desserts for the kids were extremely tasty and the Italian sausage penne was nicely spicy! Check this one out if you get the chance! ID
