Review of Odine’s Japanese & Thai Fusion – Ajax

Third time’s a charm in this little restaurant nook in Ajax across from the Home Depot/Wal-Mart plaza on Highway 2.

After a disappointing meal at Eggs Up Grill and a slightly better one at Shoeless Joe’s, we decided to go Asian and try out Odine’s.  Yum yum, here’s why:

Details: Odine’s Japanese & Thai Fusion, 269 Kingston Road East, Unit 2, Ajax ON, 905-686-6888, www.odine.ca.

Ambience: It looks pretty small from the outside but it’s roomy on the inside with tasteful, modern Asian decorations.  Neat booths with hanging decorations gives it a cozy feel.  Friendly staff helped out on each other’s tables making for a pleasant, efficient atmosphere.  Very clean washroom but expected as this is a relatively new restaurant.

Kids Stuff: Nothing offered but nothing expected at this type of restaurant.

Kids Food: No separate kids menu but we know what our kids like… rice!  So
two bowls of rice and some mango chicken later (from Clean Mom’s dish), the kids are relatively full.  Bowls of rice for $1 each was a great price.  Also gave
them some cucumber from Clean Mom’s green salad ($3).

Parents Food: For starters, we ordered some Thai Vegetable Spring Rolls …
they alone made the trip worth it!  Deliciously crisp and tasty!  Clean Mom’s
Mango Chicken was good.  Incredible Dad’s Pad Thai with Shrimp & Chicken was ok; not the best but not the worst either.  Other options included Bento Boxes (will try that next time) and Cantonese Chow Mein; quite the range of Asian cuisine options.

Coolest Thing About Restaurant: Prices for food were very reasonable.  Spring Rolls were absolutely delicious!

Worst Thing About Restaurant: If you’re a Thai restaurant, you’ve got to nail your Pad Thai dish! Other reviews on the Internet comment on slow service but we didn’t experience it during our visit.

Some Interesting Facts about Japanese and Thai Food:

Most expensive Sushi in the world – Filipino chef Angelito Araneta, Jr.
specializes in extravagant foods to be used during courtship and marriage
proposals. In 2009, he created a $2,500 “carat” cake coated completely in gold flake and topped with diamonds. In 2010, he created a dish that looked somewhat more, well, edible—the most expensive sushi in the world.  Each of the five pieces on this sushi plate is covered with a leaf of edible gold and garnished with a .2-carat African diamond. The plate was presented at a Milanan restaurant in June.  The dish was valued at 91,800 pesos, or just under $2,000.   (http://most-expensive.net/sushi)

Longest noodle in the world – Li Enhai, a talented cook from China, insured himself a spot in the Guinness Book of Records after  making a 2,852 meters long noodle, with just one kilogram of flour. In the photos, you can witness his noodle stretching technique, at a hotel opening, in Keshikten, northern China, on July 29.   (http://www.odditycentral.com/news/chinese-chef-makes-worlds-longest-noodle.html)

Overall Experience:
A clean, modern Japanese/Thai restaurant in Ajax with some tasty dishes at reasonable prices makes this a good choice for a meal out.
