Review of Milestones – Whitby

For Easter, we decided to take Clean Mom’s mother out for a nice brunch.  We ended up going to Milestones in Whitby, not a restaurant that one usually associates with brunch, but off we went.

I’ll spoil the review now… the food was fantastic!  Find out why, what one brunch meal you NEED to try when you’re there (wish I could get the recipe) and discover a cool, new website that is taking the ‘quest for the best recipes’ to a whole new level!

Details: Milestones in Whitby, 175 Consumers Drive, Whitby, ON, (905) 666-907, www.milestonesrestaurants.com. Specialty Brunch is only available on Saturdays and Sundays

Ambience:  Modern decor with clean lines, nice big booths to sit in.  Not too stuffy that you’re scared to bring your kids to the restaurant.

Kids Stuff:  Big colouring sheet placemats to keep the kids busy.  However, the most unique thing the kids loved were the little plastic toys they hung off the edge of their glasses.  For Easter, they had Easter Bunnies… now that’s getting the little things right!

Little plastic camel in a drink... we did NOT have this for brunch!

Kids Food:  For brunch, our kids had the kids French Toast and the kids Grilled Cheese.  Unfortunately, we forgot to switch the fries that came with the Grilled Cheese for something healthier … don’t make the same mistake.  The kids enjoyed the food but were not “Wowed”.

Parents Food:  We have to comment on our food.  Clean Mom had the Eggs Milestones – Eggs Benedict layered with Canadian goat cheese, sliced Roma tomatoes & avocado salsa.  I had the Prime Rib Hash – slow roasted and thinly sliced prime rib tossed with crispy potatoes, bell peppers, sweet onion, roasted corn in our specialty hash seasoning topped with two poached eggs, real hollandaise, Roma tomatoes and grilled herb toast.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!!

Coolest Thing About Restaurant:  Small plastic toys for the glasses.  Original recipes for brunch.

Worst Thing About Restaurant:  Prices!  This is not a place to eat for the faint of wallet.  The kids meals were $7.99 each!  My Prime Rib Hash was $12.99 (but worth every penny though).

Quest for the Best Recipes:

If you’ve ever seen two different recipes for the same meal and wondered which one was really the best, then you’ll enjoy a new website called stirringthepot.ca.  Started by an amateur chef from the Durham Region, in her own words, “…every month I choose four dishes then test three different recipes for each of those dishes. At the end of the month, I will let you know which version of each dish I like best.”

She does the heavy lifting and you eat the benefits!  Enjoy!

Overall Experience:  Although we can’t eat at Milestones every weekend due to the price, for a special occasion, it definitely warrants a visit for brunch.  We’ve also eaten here for dinner and the food is consistently delicious (try the Cajun Shrimp Diane… Yum!).  Price for the 3 adults and 2 kids for brunch came out to $65 (tax and tip included).

Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5
November 2010 Update

Just ate at the Milestone’s in Yorkdale Mall.  We arrived during lunch when it was super-busy so we sat at one of the Bar Tables and got served immediately!  Kids shared a Grilled Chicken with Jasmine Rice and Fruit, they ate it all up.  A much better deal than the Grilled Cheese with both dishes priced exactly the same.  My Prime Rib Sandwich Dip was delicious!!!  Clean Mom’s Lunch Trio was also extremely tasty.  Well done again Milestones!  Price for 2 adults and 2 kids, incl. tax and tip, came to $54.  Rating of 3.5 stars maintained.
