Review of Michael’s Eatery – Ajax
An interesting side benefit of this site is that it’s forcing me to choose more remote and interesting restaurants to review when going out with the family. So, on another recommendation, we tried out Michael’s Eatery after a hockey practice. Here’s what we found …
Ambience: The Saturday morning we went, it was packed with an assortment of families and regulars. The wait staff knew everyone’s names (except for ours) and were friendly in a ‘home-town diner’ kind of way. Located in an industrial plaza, it’s tucked out of the way but inside had a home-like feel.
Kids Stuff: Kids were entertained with a colouring place-mat with a maze and several licensed characters. How Michael’s Eatery secured the rights to use the images on its placemats is beyond the scope of this article… Used crayons were given in a little basket. Wash your hands before eating!
Kids Food: Nice little menu for the kids. Beware that fancy pancakes (i.e. to add chocolate chips, blueberries, etc.) will cost you an extra $1. Clean Mom purchased a Michael’s Special Breakfast and it was more than enough for her and Ballet Girl to eat.
Coolest Thing About Restaurant: The food is decent and relatively inexpensive. However, the food’s even cheaper Monday to Friday in the morning so go then if you can! A bunch of newspapers waiting for the Dads to pick up were also convenient!
Worst Thing About Restaurant: Not as cheap as I thought it would be (the person that referred us called this place the best breakfast deal in Ajax) but this is a minor point as it wasn’t expensive either.
Overall Experience: Total prices (tax and tip all-in) was $23 for the family. Friendly atmosphere and decent food make this a nice breakfast place to visit.
Corny Joke to Use at Breakfast: This guy goes into a restaurant for a Christmas breakfast while in his home town for the holidays. After looking over the menu he says, “I’ll just have the eggs benedict.” His order comes a while later and it’s served on a big shiny hubcap. He asks the waiter, “What’s with the hubcap?”
The waiter sings, “There’s no plate like chrome for the hollandaise.”

Rating: 3.0 stars out of 5
March 14, 2010 Update – Another nice breakfast here, no nonsense, fast service, homey feel, decent food, ok prices. That’s really all you need at a breakfast place! Maintaining rating.
