Review of Massey’s Restaurant – Pickering

masseysWhenever our family arrives at a restaurant we’ve never been to, I’m always hoping to find what makes the place special.

In the case of Massey’s Restaurant, combine comfort food with a storied history and you get an eatery that’s busy every time we go there.  Read on to find out what to order, some interesting history on the place and a video of what you WON’T see when you go to Massey’s (a restaurant musical?!?!?).

Ambience:  Interesting decor (big Marlin hanging on the back wall, lots of booths, framed old pics of Pickering area), friendly staff.  Can’t help notice the delicious desserts when you first walk in.  Always busy which adds to the allure of the restaurant.

Kids Stuff: Nice little colouring booklet for the kids with used crayons in a cup.  Wordsearch, crossword and colouring helps keep the kids occupied.  During our last trip, it was definitely needed as the food took very long to arrive for some reason.

Kids Food:  Our kids like pasta so a bowl each at $4.95 was a deal, especially as it came with a drink and a dessert (ice-cream).  However, if your kids are like ours (6 and 4), order only one kids dinner as there was A LOT of pasta in one dish and a lot went to waste at the end of the night.  If you’re worried it won’t be enough food, at least order a different second meal (chicken nuggets or wings).

Coolest Thing About Restaurant:  The Caesar salad that I ordered with my meal was delicious!  Probably the best Caesar I’ve had this year by a long shot!  Yum!

Worst Thing About Restaurant:  Aside from the long wait for our food, the sweet potato fries were served slightly warm (versus hot) which took away from the enjoyment factor.

History of Massey’s: From their website, the Argiro family has been proudly serving in the same location for over forty-five years. Angelo Argiro founded the business in 1965 with his former partner, Ted Papatheodorou.

masseys6Massey’s operates under the watchful eye of Angelo’s son, Don. Don’s three children and niece currently work at Massey’s along with Angelo’s cousin, Bill Ramos, who can also be found hard at work six days a week in our kitchen amongst our staff of over fifty.

Through the years, Massey’s has changed from a take-out “Burger Joint” to “Roadhouse” to “Fern Bar Eatery”. Massey’s is casual and comfortable, with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

What you WON’T see when you go to Massey’s

Overall Experience:  Total price for our family of 4 (including tax and tip) came to $45.  Clean Mom enjoyed her Feta wrap, my Western Burger was ok but the Caesar was worth the trip.  The kids enjoyed themselves and had fun using the Xcelerator Hand Dryer in the washroom (you know, the one that sounds like a jet engine…).  Funny what they remember…
