Review of Halibut Time – Ajax

Halibut Time logoOver time, our family has eaten at a LOT of fish and chips joints.  From Duckworth’s to Captain George’s, we’ve travelled the GTA.  In this article, we review our current favourite Fish & Chips place in the GTA … Halibut Time in Ajax.

Ambience:  Typical fish and chips restaurant complete with tables, booths and requisite nautical decor.  We usually pick one of the booths by the counter so the kids can walk up and watch our fish being deep fried… mmmm… deep fried…

Kids Stuff: The food comes pretty fast so there really isn’t a need to distract the kids with placemats (unless you’re going on Good Friday, then look out for the wait…).  Today, Book Boy wanted to play Name That Chewn… hilarious (see the linked post to find out how to play the game, it’s not what you think…)!

Kids Food:  Our kids love rice so for our family, we typically order one order of Halibut and Salad (get their house Italian dressing … delicious), one Halibut and Sweet Potato Fries and two sides of rice.  This is enough to feed our family with the all-in price coming to $38 (tax and tip included).  Why don’t we order regular french fries you ask?  We do sometimes but we’ve been here enough that we know what we like!

Coolest Thing About Restaurant:  The Halibut!!! Absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked most of the time!  The fish is nicely complemented by the salad and fries.

Worst Thing About Restaurant:  Washroom is small and rather dingy.  The wait staff keep changing also…

Overall Experience:  When you combine consistently delicious Halibut with good fries/rice and a nice owner (Bala) who always takes his time to say hi to his customers , you have the recipe for a gem of a Fish & Chips place.

Ode to Halibut (featuring Fozzie Bear):

(At 35 seconds) Oh Fozzie, why are you carrying the fish for? (watch the video for the answer…)

Halibut Trivia: Halibut is the largest flatfish, with large fish weighing over 200 pounds. They look like overgrown flounder. The largest recorded halibut weighed 726 pounds and was over 15 feet long.  They prefer deep, cold water, and have a life span of 40 years or more. There are two species, an Atlantic and a Pacific species, the Pacific species the smaller of the two (trivia from foodreference.com).
