Top Five Educational, Fun and Free Android Apps and Games for Young Kids
This Christmas, our family finally caught up with the Joneses and we got an Android tablet for the house. While not an iPad, it’s still amazing in what it can do for work, life and play!
Now that Daddy’s pimped it out for his use, it was time to load it up with free (because I’m cheap) apps for the kids. Similar to my other post on Nintendo DS games for young kids, I started searching for apps on the Android Market and on the web… information overload!!!
So once again, after hours of searching, here are our top five educational and fun free Android Games for young kids! Enjoy!
The Search Begins
The first place to check is the Android Market Top Lists for Arcade & Action , Brain and Puzzle and Education then select the ‘Top Free’ tab on the top of the window. Lots of suggestions here!
Next, when you do a Google search on top Android apps for kids, you get a mixed bag of paid and free apps. Some of the better sites I found for free apps are here on Babble and TechRadar.
IncredibleDad.Com Top Five
Now, without further adieu, here are our Top Five choices (in no particular order):
1) Fruit Ninja
Fun game, good for finger coordination, teaches kids persistence in order to beat high scores … aw, who am I kidding, just plain fun! Unlocking new blades, backgrounds, etc.! Slice it Sensei! And if you’re a seasoned player of Fruit Ninja, here’s a funny article that you’ll enjoy!
2) Angry Birds
Come on, don’t tell me you don’t have this game yet. I almost didn’t put it here because EVERYONE knows about it; but I couldn’t leave it off. Fun for the whole family, teaches a bit of physics (and trajectories) and pure, cold-blooded revenge. Nice…
3) Picasso Kids Paint Magic / How to Draw / Drawing Pad
Every tablet needs a drawing program for your kids to scribble in. Picasso is pretty good as a standalone free app. How to Draw will help you look like a master artist in front of your kids. Drawing Pad came free with my tablet and happens to be Ballet Girl’s favourite app. Unfortunately, I think you have to pay for Drawing Pad.
4) iStorybooks
For some reason, I couldn’t download this from the Android Marketplace app but it was accessible from the Android Marketplace website, weird! Anyhoo, a fun program for your kids to read different stories about fairytales, animals, dinosaurs and the Children’s Ramayana!?!? Now that’s diversity!
5) Kids Numbers and Math / Math Attack
On the educational front, as Book Boy and Ballet Girl are 8 and 6 respectively, these two programs gave them both enough of a challenge. There are other titles to check out in these series for spelling, phonics, etc.
Honourable Mentions
Kid Mode – liked the variety of games available, didn’t like that it was only available when you had an internet connection.
Where’s My Water - highly rated app by Disney, unfortunately wasn’t available for my tablet?!? Sheesh!
Labyrinth Lite – Just like the old wooden box game we used to play back in the days!
Google Earth / Google Sky – Really cool apps for the kids to show them the world and the constellations … yeah, for the kids…
Piano Perfect – because there’s a strong correlation between musical ability and mathematical ability … or because every child needs to learn how to play Chopsticks.
I’m always on the lookout for neat free apps for the kids so if you have any suggestions, make sure you leave a comment below to share it with our community!
