Saving Voicemail Messages Onto Your Computer

Do you have any voicemails of your kids calling you and leaving you funny/touching/hilarious messages?

Do you listen to these messages when you’re having a bad day?

Do you wish you could save them on your computer?

I’ve had a voicemail message from Book Boy saved on my work voicemail box for about 1.5 years, had been meaning to transfer it to my computer and have finally gotten around to it (a round tuit?).

Find out how to save YOUR treasured voicemails and listen to the voicemail from Book Boy that cheers me up whenever I’m feeling down!

Step 1 -Buy an 1/8 inch to 1/8 inch cable

Most people have cell phones.  This cable will connect your cell phone’s headphone jack to your computer’s microphone input jack.  If your cell phone has a smaller 3/32 jack, just buy the appropriate cable from your local electronics shop (like The Source).  Alternatively, you can drop by your local flea market and pick one up for $5 to $8 (Pickering Flea Market in my case).

Step 2 – Find Sound Recorder in Windows

For those of you using Windows, find the Sound Recorder program under Start-Accessories-Entertainment-Sound Recorder.  For all you Mac-Heads out there, I’ll leave it for Mac Dad to comment how to do it (you know who you are…).

Step 3 – Record the Voice-Mail

While your cell phone is plugged into your computer, dial your voicemail number and access the message.  When you’re ready to record, press record on Sound Recorder (it’s the red circle button) and then press the speaker phone button on your phone.  You should start seeing the Sound Recorder wave going up and down showing that it’s recording.   Once you’re done, stop Sound Recorder and save your file.

Step 4 – Edit your .wav file

If you’re a perfectionist like me, download Wave Pad Sound Editor, a free .wav editor to clean up your recording and convert it to an .mp3 if you want.

Step 5 – Share the recording with the world

Here’s the message that was worth keeping for 1.5 years:

Where are you Daddy?

Step 6 – If this doesn’t work for you…

If the above steps didn’t work for you, you could always try these other methods listed at another site.

I was desperate to save some voicemails for a very different reason than yours, I wish mine had been so sweet. unfortunately they were very threatening voicemails from my ex husband and needed them to play for the judge in court next week. This method worked beautifully, thank you so much.
